United Way’s Local History
What we now know as United Way began as a community fund in 1931. In the first few years the annual drive went by several different names (United Drive, Sheboygan Community Welfare Fund). Many corporate supporters of the community fund in the 1930’s still support United Way today.
We still have strong support from city and county government employees including schools and local papers like the Sheboygan Press. The early funds went to programs we still support to this day like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army.
In recent history, the Sheboygan United Way merged with Plymouth United Way to become The Sheboygan & Plymouth Area United Way which collects donations for 65 programs and initiatives, distributing funds County-wide. We have taken an active leadership role in the community and through collaborations have started 5 initiatives that support the biggest needs in our community. (Healthy Communities Healthy Youth, As One, the Volunteer Center, Food for Tomorrow and Lakeshore Community Health Center)
